Obituary For Lorraine Elease Blount

Lorraine Elease Blount was the youngest of three daughters born to the late Mr. Samuel Lee Blount and the late Mrs. Willie Mae Godfrey Blount on December 11, 1955. Her childhood years were spent in the Zion Hill and Primrose communities. Lorraine was a friendly, out-going child with a happy personality and a big smile. Her early education began in the Peach County School District in Fort Valley, Georgia, while her mother completed a degree at Fort Valley State University. When the family returned to the Primrose Community, Lorraine attended Luthersville Elementary School and graduated from Greenville High School in 1973. She was baptized at the Zion Hill Baptist Missionary Church as a child and participated in all youth church related activities at Zion Hill and Clark Chapel United Methodist Church, Luthersville, GA. Additionally, attending Sunday School and Vacation Bible School were instrumental in her Christian development and enhanced her love for the Lord.

Early in her life, Lorraine began to demonstrate a keen sense of analytical thinking and competiveness. She was among the first group of African American students to integrate the prominently white Greenville School, where she excelled academically. By her senior year, Lorraine had completed all the math courses offered at the school and an individualized math class was designed just for her. After graduating from Greenville High School in 1973 with academic honors, she attended Fort Valley State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Computer Science in 1977. While attending Fort Valley State College, Lorraine was initiated into the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. After one year of teaching mathematics at Woodbury High School, Lorraine expanded her ventures and moved to Charlotte, North Carolina to begin a career as an outside planning engineer with the Bell South Company. She worked in various capacities throughout the thirteen years with the company. In 1999, Lorraine returned to Georgia and taught Math in the Meriwether County School District. She was selected twice by her peers as "The Teacher of the Year” while teaching at the alternative school. She concluded her professional career as a middle school teacher at Greenville Middle School for health reasons.

Lorraine enjoyed being a free spirit and loved to spend time with friends at various gatherings. She loved to stop by the homes of family and friends and enjoy a meal. She met few strangers and was always generous with her time as well with her resources.

She leaves to cherish her many precious memories two loving and devoted sisters, Betty B. Neal and Barbara A. Phillips; one nephew, Marques Jones; two nieces, Blair Phillips and Kristen Roberson (David); one great niece, Avery Roberson; two aunts, Mrs. Charlene Swanson and Mrs. Frances Blount; several devoted cousins in the Primrose and Zion Hill communities and a host of loving cousins and dedicated friends.

As you celebrate a life well lived may the God of all comfort also grant you peace and hope (2 Cor.1:3,4). "There is going to be a resurrection" (Acts 24:15).

To the family of Lorraine Blount, please accept my sincere sympathy on her passing. Even in our sadness, I hope you hold to the thought that a life lived with so much love never really ends, but goes on forever in the hearts of those who remember. It was a pleasure to have Lorraine as a student and a co-worker. I will always remember her smile and the very private talks we shared. Betty and Barbara ... you are in my thoughts and Prayers. Queen C Hardeman, Greenville High School Faculty -- 1966-2012
