On November 20, 1936, John Thomas Huggins, son of the late James Thomas and Jennie Lou Huggins, began his earthly sojourn in Grantville, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lena Mae Strozier.

John was educated in the Coweta Public School System. He met Georgie, the love of his life, on November 13, 1959. Four months later, they were married and have been married for fifty-seven (57) years. Their union was blessed with two adopted children: Martin and Sherry. He was a loving family man.

He and his wife lived and worked in several states. In 1970, John and Georgie moved from Georgia to Fall Church, Virginia. He was the first Black, along with two other men, to be hired by Western Union Telecommunications. He retired from Western Union after twenty-five (25) years and returned to Georgia in 2005, where he reconnected with family and friends. Through all of their travels, John knew that God was ALWAYS constant, He watched over them as only God can do.

John confessed his love for the Lord and accepted Him as his savior at an early age. Wherever they live, John made sure that they attended church regularly and was very active in different ministries and activities. He loved his Pastor and church family at South Metro Ministries. He truly enjoyed his Men’s Bible Study Class. He loved people and enjoyed traveling, coaching and telling stories. He exuded God’s love in his daily living.

John was a people’s person. He loved and coached many sports. He coached many children and adults in softball and basketball. He impacted and made a difference in the lives of many who God allowed him to encounter and was an inspiration to his family and friends. He loved to talk and engage in meaningful and thought provoking conversations.

John lived a full and rewarding life. He “Fought the Good Fight of Faith”, and on Sunday evening, October 22, 2017, he finished his earthly assignment. With his wife by his side, he peacefully made his transition to his heavenly home. The legacy of his love for people and life will be cherished by his devoted wife, Georgie; his son, Martin, Washington, D. C.; his daughter, Sherry, Dumfries, VA.; two brothers, Willie L. Adams (Rebecca), Columbus, GA and Mason Fitten , Jr. (Yvonne), Jacksonville, FL; eight (8) grandchildren, two (2) great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, his South Metro family and friends.

Condolences

May you find comfort in Jesus' words at John 11:25, "I am the resurrection and the life. He that exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life". And I hope that it helps to know that others care.
